R&D Scientist - Nuclear Fuel Elements

Job DescriptionPosition Description

Responsible for developing methods to manufacture nuclear fuel elements including but not limited to graphite matrix production, overcoating, fuel core pressing, green pebble pressing, compact pressing, shaping, and heat treatment.

Responsibilities
  • Leading R&D efforts related to fuel element fabrication
  • Current major tasks include: graphite matrix production, overcoating, fuel core pressing, green pebble pressing, compact pressing, fuel element shaping, and heat treatment

  • Advising on topics related to fuel element production

  • Contribute to the design and licensing effort of the TRISO-X Facility which will fabricate TRISO based fuel elements

  • Experimental system design

  • Experimental apparatus design and assembly

  • Basic understanding of the nuclear fuel cycle

  • Basic understanding of a nuclear power plant

  • Operational experience with or knowledge of many different types of machines for the study and production of nuclear fuel and nuclear fuel materials. For example: uniaxial press, isostatic press, hot isostatic press, spark plasma sintering furnace, high temperature furnace, vacuum furnace, CNC lathe, CNC mill, chemical vapor deposition system, inert atmosphere glovebox, tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Laser Flash Analysis (LFA), dilatometer, caliper, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

  • Operational experience with or knowledge of many different types of processes. For example: sintering, pressing, heat treatment, extrusion, chemical vapor deposition, melt casting

  • Operational experience measuring or knowledge of many different physical properties. For example: density, packing fraction, particle size, ppm impurities, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, diffusion

  • Familiarity with materials including: graphite powder, phenolic resin, organic binders

  • Ability to concisely communicate complex scientific ideas both verbally and in writing

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Material Science, Material Science engineering, or Nuclear Engineering or a related field

  • Ability to obtain a DOE security clearance is required

Minimum Experience/Knowledge
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required (graduate school can be included if relevant work)

  • Applicant must be willing to work with hazardous materials such as low enriched uranium, nitric acid, and phenolic resin
